Last weekend my daughter made her first painting in oils. We set up a few oranges and talked about color values and composition again. She doesn’t like this academic approach when I’m teaching her, but she always gets into the rhythm of painting, ends up having fun, and is proud of what she creates. And I always promise her free paint afterwards. Anyway, didn’t it turn out so cheery? Excuse my proud mama moment.

I remembered that I didn’t show the other paintings she did for Christmas presents. I only have in-progress shots since we were in such a rush to frame and ship.

Isn’t this photo the funniest? The orange cat watching her draw the orange cat in the book in a doorway… This one went to my mother, who has an orange cat… My daughter wanted to paint a rainbow ground for that unexpected twist of groovy.

The roses, magnolia leaves, blue willow painting went to my sister-in-law. It turned out so pretty that I am sad I don’t have a finished shot. The canvas on the table is our practice board. I can demonstrate brushstrokes without defiling her canvas (she hates it when I paint on hers) and she can practice before trying it on the actual painting. We usually have one going for each painting.
One day I even talked my 9 year old to paint with us. He chose this little Corgi pup. He did really well, although he depended more on my step-by-step instruction than intuition (and experience) like his sister.

He wanted to paint the dog on rocks.

My 5 year old did a pattern kitty, inspired by the project on Deep Space Sparkle–a fabulous art-for-kids website.

I added some trees, and now little kitty keeps me company in the studio.
I love creating art with my children and unlocking their art super powers within. Check out my post on painting with children.

Yep, I’m suppose to show some cottagey fabrics and stuff. Well, darn darling Darlene has about convinced me to paint the bed a color other than black, and that is throwing off all my absolute decisions I had made. So I’ll be back next with what I’m considering now. Blue!

I love seeing your kids paintings. They have a FABULOUS art teacher, too! Wish I could have gotten step-by-step instructions on painting from you. The art teacher I had gave minimal instruction so I stumbled most of the time and don’t feel like I learned what I should have. I still don’t feel confident in painting by myself. Anyway, I love the orange cat painting J did. I mean, that cat is AWESOME! So are the flowers! Even though I can’t see much of what she ended up painting, I can tell the roses turned out wonderful. She’s got the talent! I remember trying to paint an apple on my first still life and the darned thing looked like a plum for forever! I’ll never forget that chicken J painted. Incredible. The corghi pup is also neat and I love the black/white kitty. Both paintings are keepers! So cool to have art from your own kids. I keep art pieces our kids make too and have framed a few. Of course, their paintings are from art they’ve done at school instead of at home. I need to change that! Would be fun to paint together. I let them paint at home but for some reason, I don’t join in with them and I need to. Next time for sure. Thanks for sharing and hope all is well with everyone!
Don’t tell A I said this…but little Corgi looks like he’s super-dooper proud of his boulder-sized poopie poops. Just like my little dog.
It is a cheery oil painting! Lovely
I love all the artwork! Talented students and teacher.
I absolutely love the posts about your art and your children’s…it’s fascinating to me to see all this breathtaking talent!
