Hey, there, Good Lookin’! Can I interest you in a B & A today? Just don’t try any funny business because I’m wielding really, really sharp pencils. Okay, I’d love to show you around our new study/office/homeschool room. Follow me!

The beforsies. Get a tissue if you need it.
And, the after. Now give me the tissue.

I no longer loathe this room. In fact, I LOVE it now. We all do–and find ourselves hanging out in here together. This is the room where I work, blog, and homeschool. Now that we are homeschooling two kids this school year, it feels like we are doing this for reals now–unlike the last two years that just felt like practice homeschool. It was absolutely imperative that the room have a cheerful turnaround and function much more efficiently. If it didn’t, I was going to lose my mind.
I wanted two computer stations and one workstation that could support two children and a teacher at a time.

I also wanted flexibility with the workstation by orienting it where three sides could be utilized.

That is Dearie, our homeschool mascot.
And it needed to function like a traditional school room so that a child or two could sit at the desk and face a marker board, when necessary.

I went to IKEA with these ideas yet still vague on how I would carry it out. After meandering their office department, I configured a few inexpensive Vika tabletops and bases into a T desk. The green desk is the Vika pine slab painted Benjamin Moore Clover Green (2034-10).
I bought the long pine slab and a shorter one to make the waterfall edge on the front. An IKEA magnet board attached to the front makes a nice spot to practice phonics with magnetic letters.

The green top sits right on top of the white laminate tabletops and is secured to the back wall–thanks to Chris.

I used three different bases for the tables–one with a door for a computer tower, one with an open shelf, and one with drawers. This keeps me much more organized and clutter out of sight. (Do you have a slight addiction to these white melamine trays? I have four.)

I am so happy now to have my own little work corner with a file cabinet within reach. I had been using little accordion envelopes stuffed under my desk. That is no way to operate. I have a place for all my stuff! Do you see the painting?
I couldn’t stand looking at those dark, vacant windows peering out into the garage any longer (I had such issues with this room!).

Throwing up some big canvases to cover up the windows seemed like a good idea…until I was painting five coats of paint on each triangle. But I love that expanse of light and color now instead of sad little windows. The daybed is perfect for read alouds or as an overflow guest room.

If you are in your 30s, I guarantee you had a yarn ship of this design in your house growing up. On clearance at Urban Outfitters.

There is storage deluxe in our Mengel Module piece.
Do you remember how it needed love?
Isn’t he gorgeous now? I will tell my secrets in another post…

I decided to do a gallery wall with art I already had–photography from my friend Rachael, an abstract painting done by my son when he was three, drawings and a painted heart by my daughter, a painting by my Aunt Rita circa 1983 of a brunette schoolgirl, a shell tray that was a wedding gift from a longtime friend who bought it in the South Pacific, and a yellow bird–a hostess gift from Nester. Uh, it wasn’t yellow when she gave it to me, and I felt bad changing it until I realized, “She’s the Nester…everything she owns has been painted 583 times…or is it 584? Anyway, she’ll be proud.”

My oldest son went through an obsessive magna doodle phase as a toddler. He drew this amazing composition of the alphabet when he was three. I loved it so much that I made it into a painting three years ago.
Remember these chairs? It really was genius to flip-flop the vinyl and tapestry on each chair. I mean, really brilliant. But sometimes you get all brains and no beauty.

But how do you like them now? Smart and beautiful! Fabric from Lewis & Sheron. Rug from FLOR.
Of course now that the room is all done, it seems like it was as easy as…

Letters cut from scrap wood in our garage and painted gold.
Thank you to Chris for helping to put the pieces together and building a frame for the marker board. And, thank you to this guy.
He is an IKEA-putting-together lovefool. Thank you for not balking with each IKEA flat box I carried home. And they say you aren’t handy. I scoff at them!
So here I am in my new and improved study, tapping away at the letters and constructing strings of verbal magic for you each day. But, it is here that I reveal a dirty little secret…I have a repulsively filthy pinkie on my right hand–apparently. What in the world, MacDaddy? Why is the colon/semicolon key so dirty?
~~~~~~~~
Well, I hope it was worth the wait. I know it was worth the work for me. There is a new happy attitude in the air here…and check out Design Refuge for their before and after challenge!
Oh my gosh I LOVE that room!
Amazing!
Teach me Oh, Master of all things colorful and whimsical and modern and useful, I need to learn the workings of your ways.
I want to be 8 years old and homeschooled in that room.
This room should win an award.
I take it from your comment that you aren’t holding a grudge against me for painting the yellow bird!
Thank you for the Nest Files link!
I think he is much happier yellow!
You could have shredded it and made a decoupage vase and I would have been thrilled.
Love it! You did good!!!!
Ok, I was about to be all profound until I read the Nester’s note, and now I am just picturing her saying that.
WOW…I’ve been homeschooling for more years that I can remember and I NEED YOUR ROOM! I think I would stop doing practice homeschool then. (loved that, and so true)….seriously, it is just too fun.
Angela, wow! Gorgeous. I agree with Nester, I would like to be homeschooled there, please. It is the perfect setting for them, you did an amazing job. And I LOOOOVE the painting your recreated from your son’s Magnadoodle! So cool.
love it love it! Mr Mengel sure cleaned up nice.
My own vision for a similar space (which has to be sort of constructed here in the next 2 years) is also bright and cheery. lots of white, with punches of orange or yellow. marimekko-ish. I love your painting and probably *best* of all I love your recreation of The Elder Boy’s magnadoodle doodling. Such a great idea! I would have never thought to use that shade of green with the blue of the walls and it works so well.
That’s a happy place to learn!!
You really have the knack for combining simple and modern without it looking to start. It fits so well into a comfy cozy home environment. So beautiful. My favorite is the pop of green on the desk top.
Oh, wow! That room looks fabulous!
Excellent. Show some pictures after contact with the enemy.
YEAH! It was worth the wait! I LOVE it! Bright, cheery and organized! And I didn’t even have to show up, knocking on your door uninvited! Have fun learning together in that gorgeous room. And thank you very much…now I can finally sleep!
Angela, Angela, Angela…I can’t tell you how much I love this room!! You are a decorating genius. And that canvas! It’s gorgeous!
I love the colors you used in the room and the simplicity of it of it all. Those are two important things for a room where one is trapped with one’s children for 5 hours a day!
(to the tune of Lions & Tigers & Bears, OH MY – from TheWizard of Oz) “Dearie”, fabulous green desk, artistic lamp, OH MY…. wooden ABC letters, orange patterned bedspread, reupholstered chairs, OH MY… orange Flor rug, original artwork, blue flower safety pin holder, OH MY…. bun bookends, white melamine tray, triangle canvases, OH MY…..
I LOVE IT ALL!!!! How DO you think of all of that! Can I just be inside your artistic brain so I can do all that you too?!! I mean, really… you never cease to amaze me! You MUST move back to Big H (boo hoo hoo)…. I just need someone creative who’s also able to not spend a fortune on anything house-wise. Ok, ok, I know that’s not going to happen but I can dream, can’t I?! I wish I could go to school in that room. So colorful and fun! I REALLY love that orange patterned bedspread….. where’d you get it, when etc?
Love your comment, Gina!
Thank you!!!!
The duvet cover is from IKEA–bought it 2.5 years ago. Not sure if it is still there.
First off, I would like to be the “occasional overflow guest” in that room (but you’d better count the white melamine trays after I leave….) My favorite part is the green painted table. Brilliant color choice. And the chairs, they are also my favorite. And the magna doodle picture is my favorite, too.
I just have to ask though…..Where the heck are all the school books? If you aren’t addicted to books (and book shelves) you may not make it as a home schooler in the long run LOL.
I was wondering if anyone would ask about that…leave it to a fellow homeschool mom!
We have floor to ceiling bookshelves on two walls in the family room (adjacent to the homeschool room). So books are out there that we don’t use daily, and we also keep the fun reading books there so that they are easily accessible to the kids. The rest of the books are in the white wall cabinet or on the shelf under the green desk or in the Mengel dresser. I function better with less visible stuff.
Thank you for all your favorites!
Coming back to enjoy the colors. Again.
And the FLOR carpet squares–so they will adhere kindly and nicely to the wood floor? (As in, not just concrete?) I am considering putting some inside our back door (dining area/kitcheny area) when our new wood floors go in, which is almost-imminent. I love the possibilities, but wasn’t sure if they’d be nice to the floors if they are taken up?
What in the world of all geniusnesses. That painting is so over the top cool. What talent. It turned out so fabulous that I can hardly stand it. I need to come back later tonight just to soak it all in.
Have you ever heard of a semi colon oscopy….I’ve heard that it really gets it clean.
xx – Christina
oh my, I’m losing it over the colonoscopy… How did you know clever potty humor is the way to my heart?
I am in love with the magna doodle painting!
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. You, my blog friend, have TASTE.
I’ve hit the refresh button about 20 times, and I’m still only able to see 1/2 of the photos. Not fair! I am able to see your painting, which is the most important thing to me. Everything else in a room falls away when there is a painting to look at. I love it! It’s not what I expected. And I love it!
I’m working on designing a house in my head, including a homeschooling space in one end of the family room. The house will be mine it two weeks, and there is a lot of work to do! My dreamy Frenchman even said those four magic words: “Whatever you want, Baby.”
What a beautiful difference. I might go back to school in a classroom like that! Good job, Punkin!
Looks gorgeous! We’re closing in on finishing our home office (though we don’t have time to find such fantastic garage sale finds as you have done!). Can’t wait to have our “pit” turned into a real office as well.
WHA…..WOW…..that is amazing. We both just took a look and are practically drooling. OK can I say having seen the “before” room in person, we are in beyond insace awe. It didn’t look that bad before! ….but that is Seriously insane. Very impressive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow, awesome. You have given me so many great ideas for our new playroom. Love it
Lovely! I’m always amazed at what you come up with and how you do it yourself you design queen maven!
I’m in LOVE!!!! That room takes my breath away. I know you must LOVE going into it every day. The little nook with your vintage chest is my favorite part of the room. Kuddos to you! It’s amazing. xo, cristi
WOW!! It looks amazing!!! So much better than before. I noticed you have the maps I gave to Ashton on the walls.
You’re amazing. I wish I had one-tenth of your creativity and style. I’ve got a friend who is homeschooling this year, so I’ll have to send her the link. Looks like the perfect room for it!
Absolutely fantastic. You are amazing!
Hi, Angela,
I came here from Nester’s Nest Files – what a gorgeous room! The colors, whimsy, and brightness would make any child race there to learn each day, I would think.
The Mengel dresser is beautiful, and I love the green table and the color of the walls. The piece de resistance, though, is the painting! I was thinking it was folk art or from a local gallery – when I read you painted it from your son’s Etch-a-Sketch drawing, I just about fell off my bed (Saturday morning blogs and coffee in bed – what could be better?)
Oh, and I LOVE the chairs!!! Great design. So functional and pretty. I hope you and your kids enjoy learning together in this space!
Thanks for sharing!
Kelly
Love this school room-it’s so happy and functional and wonderful and super, looks like a great way to officially start the school year. And it makes me anxious to finish touching up our school room!
Ann, at A Holy Experience, sent us over today to take a peak! At first glance, I think I would have been overwhelmed to create such a room, but the way you walked us through each step – I could do that! Thank you for not only “showing off” your room – but inspiring us to work our out too!!!!! Love It!
Looks great! I love the center countertop – great use of space. Now all you need is another iMac to match! (Clayton can help you with that, I’m sure!)
What a fabulous room!! I have a playroom / laundry room / soon-to-be homeschool room that needs some serious love and attention. I need some of your creativity!
Here via Ann,
and this makes me want to turn back time and choose to home school. Unbelievable.
sigh.
sigh.
sigh.
girl. you got it goin’ on.
I am more inspired than I can say!
what a great inspiration. Not only for a homeschool room,but for an everything room. Only trouble is that i look at it and say, Oh no, I could never put all those pieces together like that., You are so creative.
This room is so inspiring; I especially love the magna doodle drawing and will be purchasing my three year old son, Will, one today in the hopes that he begins to construct letters soon.
WOW you are so inspiring with your pops of color and edited space! Lovvvvvve it!!!
I love that room! It’s bright and clutter-free. But, one question…Where do you keep all the books? Don’t you use books in your homeschooling? What about papers, art supplies, etc.? Where is all that stuff?
Thank you, Barbara! Debbie posted the same question above.
We have a family room off of the homeschool room that has two walls with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. Believe me, there are books! And the amazing modular piece holds all our supplies–there is one drawer for educational games, one just for all kinds of paper (lined, graphed, index cards, toliet…ha j/k). Each kid has a drawer of their own to hold their pencil boxes and personal stuff. Works great! There is a shelf unit under the green desk that holds their workbooks and daily stuff, too. As for the art supplies, we are lucky enough to have a huge art studio in our basement for all the messy and fun stuff. http://www.tphblog.com/a-hers-hers-studio/ We just keep crayons and colored pencils in the homeschool room–also out of the way so that our mischievous toddler doesn’t get into all the stuff, too. Glad you asked!
I wish my office looked like that! Fabulous job!
this is the most lovely homeschool room i’ve ever seen. it’s inspiring in so many ways. you did an amazing job!
I found your blog via the Nest Files and I think I’m in love. I’m a homeschooler too and am convinced that surrounding our little peeps with beauty is a teacher unto itself. I LOVE everything you did in this room and I especially love all the IKEA hacks. Your style inspires me and I may just have to read your blog from cover to cover. Like tonight.
And your ‘about’ page—-brilliant.
signed,
your new best friend,
edie
edie
one ‘edie’ would have been fine. i blame that on inspiration induced giddy-ness.
Would you be willing to share the name of the fabric you used for the chairs? I looked on the Lewis & Sheron website, but can’t seem to locate it. TIA!
Pass me the box…I love it.
-Rene
Oh my, blue walls, pops of orange and green ? LOVE! Brilliantly styled, what a magical spot to lounge and work in ! Thanks so much for linking up to the party this week, so glad I could visit your gorgeous room !
Kate
Trying to catch up on blogs, saw your recent post about the chairs – I drooled, and then realized you obvs finished your study, clicked away, and fainted. I really, really love this room and all the details (especially that alphabet painting, wow) and your commentary (lone dirty keyboard button? too funny). I’d rather do my teaching (am a teacher) in your study than in my own classroom.
Thank you so much for this posting. I am in the process of making a copycat homeschool room. My kids & I are so excited to have a real school room.
I love, love, love, love that ABC painting, and that it came from your child’s magna-doodle phase just makes it so much better! I can’t stop looking at it!
Love the rest of the room too, but that painting is awesome!
OMG! What a transformation!Looks amazing!
Angela,
You did an outstanding job. After seeing all the pictures of your decorating your home in NC, it doesn’t surprise me in the least that your homeschool room would look fantastic too. A great place to learn.
My dear sweet Angela – I would like to begin school all over again!!!! Your creation is very encouraging and I think I would learn more in your inviting setting. You are a great designer!!!!! I need to take lessons from you. Love your “special touch”.
