Prime Time

It’s not your grandmother’s house (or your great-grandmother’s house, if you are a young one).

It’s the 50s Prime Time Cafe at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Florida.  Tables are set up in retro kitchen vignettes–with all sorts of kitschy accessories.  The waitstaff treat you like family, “Eat your veggies!” or “No cellphones at the table–spend time with your family!”  I loved all the details that reminded me of all those estate sales I shopped in the 1950 tract home neighborhood Westbury, in Houston, Texas.

Did you see these books on the shelf?  I had these in my childhood home.  Did you?

I started this post in November but thought today would be a good time to finish it as I’ve been humming Daydream Believer all day, thinking about driving in my white Eclipse as a teenager singing along to Oldies with Natalie, and concluding that my previously inexplicable affinity with vintage everything originated with old TV shows.  As much as Father Knows Best reruns gave me a antiseptic look into 1950s design when I was a girl, The Monkees tv series delivered me a visual vocabulary, albeit kitschy, of the 1960s.  Davy Jones was always my favorite, that cheery Brit.  And, when he showed up on my very favorite rerun show of all–Brady Bunch–I thought it was a match made in heaven.  Marcia was a lucky girl!

By the way, you would think the way my husband and I throw around the description “Brady Bunch house” that it is official architecture terminology.

Rest in peace, Davy.  Now I’m going to see if I can round up some Monkees episodes for my little ones.

What I wouldn’t give for one more singin’-to-the-oldies Eclipse ride with you!

Love the 50′s prime Time Cafe! I am old enough to have watched the airing of Marcia and Davy Jones, cough, cough. I use to live in the Brady Bunch house neighborhood. It is on a street with every era of home, ’cause the whole city is that way.

Love the vintage kitchen, and to think when growing up around it all, I wanted to modernize. Hey, hey for The Monkees!

While searching for information about painting upholstery this post really caught my attention. I have the exact set of Childcraft Encyclopedias, they are one of my prize posessions. They actually resided at my grandmother’s home when I was growing up, and I adored them. When my own children were small my grandmother gave them to me for us to enjoy together. The poetry and nursery rhymes are my favorite!
Davy Jones was my first love. Big, big crush I had on him.
Thanks for taking me back to some of my childhood favorites!
