As we are cruising through spring, I wanted to give you a look-see at the projects on my list. Beware, this post contains some scary images of the place I call home.
First up, our backyard. It is always haggard this time of year. I have dreams of a raised vegetable garden, grass instead of weeds, and a pretty place to sit.
Heard of the woman who lived in a shoe? I’m the woman who lives in a shoebox–a long, rectangular ranch house. And, our box house has a square cement patio. With a round trampoline off of it. Now, I’m not knocking the ugly tramp because we have goodtimes with her–but she does not add to the beauty of the yard. So, the mission includes creating a kid-friendly adult space on the patio, adding the annuals, creating a garden space, growing some grass, and successfully ignoring the trampoline when not in use.
I’m working with these chairs I bought from Lowe’s a few years back. They lost their table last year when it became the dining room table at the cottage. They have to do.
I have a pair of planters that killed two boxwoods last summer–that’s how I’m telling the story. I’ll try some more boxwoods this year and water, ahem.
I want to do this as inexpensively as possible yet fabulous, of course. Time to work some magic.
~~~~~~~~
Next, I’ve been asked to add some warmth to the waiting room of a surgery center. The building and furnishings are fairly new. I’ll work with the existing black chairs and go from there. People wait for their loved-ones through surgery in this room, so it needs to be calming and low-key.
~~~~~~~~
Furniture cast-offs huddle together in my studio. Don’t be scared, little ones, I will give you new life. My friend Holly found the bench on the right at a church yard sale. She called me right away, described it, and said it was so me. Now, how do I make it completely me? Paint the frame something bold? Leave original finish and reupholster in faux white reptile? It will eventually live in the guestroom. I’ve been thinking something grass green on the groovy rocker I picked up at Scott Market last summer. It would be a perfect reading spot by the bookshelves in the family room.
The side tables behind hail from the Salvation Army and have such great potential with paint. I mean, look at the quatrefoil. Since I hope to sell these, I don’t know what color to do. Suggestions?
~~~~~~~~
An important but not pressing project is my living room. We’ve been in our house for almost three years now, and it has yet to be a great place to hang. The first mistake was the oppressive brown walls that I hastily chose when we moved in and I was 8-months pregnant. It is a large room but we have never had enough furniture to fill it, and then it became a makeshift storage room for the furniture I was buying for the cottage. What did I care if the room was stuffed with, uh, stuff? We weren’t using the room anyway.
However, when we moved the cottage furniture out, I declared that the living room’s time had finally come. Holly and I came up with an amazing plan…and then the man and I found a wonderful house to buy. All living room fluffing came to a screeching halt. Turns out the other house wasn’t a go, and now months later, the living room still waits and waits and waits. I’d love to take her to the finish line. Does it drive you crazy that I personify everything?
The whole rug thing completely scares me. Where is my confidence? I think a white shaggy one would be so dreamy here, but a black and white print would be much more dramatic. And then there is that whole thing with the geometric orange and white fabric I ordered still on the bolt in the closet–where is that going? This room cracks me up: how many trend pieces can I cram in one room? Garden stool, check! Lucite table, check! Paintings layered on mantel, check!
Pair of statement lamps on table, check! Pair of chairs flanking table with pair of lamps, check! I’d love to have this space cozy yet chic soon. Just another thing on the list.
~~~~~~~~
Finally–and this is the scariest of them all–my cave. People, this is where I spend a lot of my time–homeschool, blogging, and various other Internet wanderings. Is there any question why my soul is slowly seeping from my body? Ask my husband how many times I tell him I hate this room. First of all there are no overhead lights and very little natural light. Second, there is too much junk and too little soft. Keep looking at it and you’ll need an antidepressant. Not pictured in the room is our drum set–the cherry on top.
Something has got to happen before next school year. Ugh.
~~~~~~~~
And this is the point where I would like to sprout an extra pair of arms and maybe get a few extra hours per day. Thankfully summer is coming up, and I have some more time. What are you working on right now?
Angela, your living room looks amazing already! Would definitely trade it for any room in my current house. Though I don’t think you would want my borrowed futon or 80′s sectional sofa…
What am I working on right now?….. well, you had a looksy at our house recently and…. well, we’ve been here 6 years and STILL don’t have: 1) living room complete, 2) den complete, 3) our bedroom (hate our bedspread, furniture finish is that gross, dark cheap finish, chair is white and doesn’t go well in room, need headboard etc), 4) make upstairs into a better “gameroom” for kids, 5) white “soar thumb” oven appliance in kitchen changed to stainless steel (like all the other appliances), 6) new vent-a-hood in kitchen (since the one we have now just makes a loud sound, period), 7) rug in entry,
backyard re-vamped …. lots I can think of that we just never get around to. I want to get our house complete but I do NOT have the talent you have to find good deals and then re-furbish them so it makes it a bit harder to do. Also, we’re always running in a million directions and we just “live” so after a while, you sort of forget about what’s not done and in a strange way, get used to it. But, it does cross my mind many times when I look around and realize how long we’ve been here and how much we haven’t done. Have no fear though…. one step at a time…
LOVED what you did in your living room so far and can’t wait to see the finished product as well as the backyard re-do etc. It’ll be fabulous, as always!
I love the salvation army dresser with the flowers on it. I’d paint it white, get new knobs and put it in my daughter’s room. Except I don’t have a daughter. Course if you are taking design tips from me…the world might be coming to an end.
My summer project is going to be the boys room. streamlined, personal, tied together, vibrant yet peaceful. Your opinions will be sought! Especially as I try to trump Josh’s ideas.
I think your living room looks pretty darn nifty! I think I have those same black outdoor chairs, but mine came from Target. I’m currently trying to get our yard to look more loved and less abandoned. My planters kill plants, too! Weird.
Angela, I was just wishing you were available to help us on our remodel. We’ve torn out the first kitchen and we’re making a master suite in that area of the house. I need your creative juices to see this through. What a gift you have. I’ve seen your house, and it is lovely.
Looks good so far. Our projects never end. Hubby loves doing things outside, planting,etc, except this year 4 small raised garden beds is my and the kids project. My first attempt at gardening. I ad sure to learn a lot. Then my house has no rugs and no curtains. That would be another project.
I love the living room! (I’ve wanted to find a place for a bright green garden stool like that for ages.)
If anyone can spruce up your cave, you can. I wish I had some ideas to throw your way, but, uh, ideas are what I rely on YOU for!
So, yeah, what about my dining room??? It’s a crowded, non-matching mess. (And not non-matching/eclectic. I mean non-matching “who thought this looked good here?”).
You have a beautiful home, Punkin. Now come see me, after you finish with Donna, and give me some ideas. I need incentive!
If you want to fulfill another trend you can check another thing off the list be purchasing a cowhide rug…I know I fell victim to this trend myself. I must say you’ve done a great job on your trendy room..looks awesome.
Seriously look @ all of your treasures. I’d buy that quatrefoil cabinet….love it all. I especially love that you shared that front room packed with stuff.
Aw, I think you’re too hard on yourself about your living room. It’s stunning! And I agree that the white shag rug would be fab. I think that’s all it needs!
If I were you, I’d do a makeover on your office. If it’s depressing to even look at a picture of it – girl, it’s time. I just got done with my own makeover on my bedroom…and it is life-altering. It used to be the most depressing room in the house…and now it’s one of the best! You should go for it.
And last, but not least…I may dream about that church bench tonight. It is amazing.
I have been working on our master bath, living room and seriously need to redo the buffet in our dining room. Unfortunately not enough time (or money- ha!) in the day!
