Art, Children, Observations

It’s art hanging day in the princess room.

This painting went up a few days ago when my daughter was at an outsourced homeschool class.  When she returned home, I heard giggles–I LOVE her laugh–tumbling out of her room.  She loves it!  Whew.

I was a little nervous, you see, because I had painted over a canvas she doodled on when she was four years old.  I loved so many of her passages on the canvas,  but overall I wasn’t loving the painting.  She does not like me to mess with her art.  I get that.

What I do love is this drawing she also did when she was four.  Just makes me smile, huge.  So I thought it would be a fun idea to combine the two as an homage to her four-year-old art style.

I tried to preserve as many of the fabulous marks she made on the painting while adding the blue-dress lady.

When my daughter was four, she made these fabulous multi-tiered, scale-like crowns for her princesses.  They were fabulous.  At the time she drew these crowns in with pencil and I painted the scallops in.  She went over it with glitter, but of course.

An upside down red crown.

I also saved the flowers she painted in.

And now I think I need to incorporate more glitter into my art.

Reading with my kiddos is one of my favorite things to do with them.  We plow through library books, but sometimes we look at design books together and pick our favorite rooms.  Other times we go through The Art Book, thumb through, and pick our favorite art on the two pages.  Aside from being fun for me, the seemingly innocent cuddly reading time becomes exposure to art and artists and an exercise in articulating preferences.  I’m sneaky like that.

So the game goes like this, as it happened the other day with my four-year-old son:

“Which one do you like better?  The one by Giorgio Morandi?  Or, the one by Gustave Moreau?”

“Gustave Moreau.” (in the cutest mispronunciation ever)

“Okay.  Why do you like that one better?”

“Because, you know, she is naked.”

Word for word.  Ah, boys.

~~~~~~~~
And, this is what my daughter wrote this week in her assignment to write three sentences using her spelling words.
She was pleased to know that I’ve, indeed, seen an antique store spelled “Anteeks.”
~~~~~~~~

Enjoy the weekend, everyone!

Love the art; love the placement between the doors. Takes me back to when my girlies weren’t teenagers! They weren’t into princess stuff, but the same feel comes through…in colors and in other ways that I can’t put into words.

We have a good supply of art books. They get carted off to bedrooms frequently, then spill out weeks later during cleaning days. I loved teaching homeschool art. I needed nothing to teach it (no curric…no experts); that is how you know what your passion is. Do you have a favorite book?

Angela, love that girl of yours! I also love the fact you had no idea which picture your boy would prefer?…..duh. Love you!

That painting made me smile! So fun and I love the layers of paint. I think you should make prints and sell them. :)

I also love the framed artwork. I especially love gold frames around children’s art to elevate it. Very cool…..I’m wondering if you painted the mats on some of them, or if you purchased them the fun colors. I’m debating using craft paints on some of mine and not quite sure how it turns out.

Thank you for the kind comment!

I picked out the colored mats–but good question about painting existing mats. I did spray paint a mat bright white once because the one I had was ivory, and I was impatient and didn’t want to wait to get to a store to buy another. Plus, I like to recycle. :) It worked great! I’m sure you could do that with colored spray paint. Good luck!

Juliet’s room is so pretty, I’m sure she is really proud of it. I know that whenever grandma gets there it will be the first place Juliet takes her.
Callan’s brutal honesty is funny! Tell him his grandpa agrees with his pick. ha
Love all of you!

Oh my gosh! We just did an art wall in Xander’s room…per his instruction. I think I may have a designer/party planner/architect on my hands. It went from baby blue and castles to bright green and white and art and very grown up. Love your stories about the kids! It makes me feel like we are closer. ;)

Heather just gave you an award on her blog after I gave it to her. So, I came over to see who it had been passed to.

I love the artwork. I wish I had artistic ability. My stick figures even come out deformed.

Oh my… I came over here from another blog (can’t remember which because I’ve been visiting too many this evening!) and just love this post… It’s so refreshing to hear something about children – and adorable ones at that! I could almost hear your daughter’s giggle come bubbling out of her room – and your son’s choice of paintings was so much fun (although totally predictable lol). Can’t wait to ream more posts from you. I just love the fresh style of your writing. Have a nice day – and thanks!

I love the waiting artwork…..what a great, great way to decorate her room, and celebrate her artistic pursuits and talent. Can’t wait to see the ‘finished product.’ I also like those interior glass doors. Neato. (Are they going IN to her room??)

Real life art is just the best way to adorn one’s walls. makes my heart happy to see it being done!

Oh, I love her art! It reminds me so much of your style at that age. The eyelashes are definitely yours! And the naked comment was hilarious! At least he’s honest!

LOVE that he picked the naked painting! That makes me laugh because it is so how boys are!
